Throughout the book Gatsby transforms himself in many different ways, the first being his obvious transformation from James Gatz to his new persona of Jay Gatsby, under the leadership of Dan Cody. Through this particular transformation, Gatsby changes from a poor boy from Minnesota to a wealthy independent businessman from New York. Dan Cody taught Gatsby how to be a gentleman, Cody gifted Gatsby, who at the time had no assets, a wardrobe in which Gatsby was able to completely look the part of a wealthy businessman. For 5 years Gatsby sailed with Cody on board his yacht and throughout the time Gatsby was taught many valuable skills from Cody, throughout his time on the Yacht Gatsby was taught all about acting wealthy and important, skills which turned out to be invaluable many years later as gatsby attempts to win over Daisy’s hand.
Love also changes Jay Gatsby. The desire Jay feels for winning over Daisy drives all of his life, from real estate purchases to day to day living, Gatsby completely changes his character many times over throughout the novel in order to impress Daisy. Near the end, Gatsby completely turns his life around, ending the lavish parties he had hosted for many years to satisfy his love interest, a transformation which is huge, but not enough, for Daisy.
