Nick quote breakdowns

Nick Carraway is a young, poor mostly optimistic stockbroker living in a tiny house in west egg. He lives beside the glamorous and massively rich Jay Gatsby, whom nick considers to be his friend as the novel goes on. Nick considers himself to reserve all judgment of people he meets, a quality which is difficult to see in him throughout the novel.

“I am inclined to reserve all judgements, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and made me the victim of not a few veteran bores.”- Chapter One
This quote is intended to tell us that Nick does not make judgments on the people he meets straight away, this can show us that the start of the book should have zero bias, however as Nick learn the characters better throughout the book, there is perhaps more room for bias from Nick. This quote also tells us that Nicks none judgemental attitude has shown him true natures of many people he has met?

“When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. “ – Chapter One
This quote outlines that Nick thinks the world should treat no one person any differently than the next, no matter the amount of money the people have different, Nick believes that the rich elite should not have any more privileges than the not so wealthy, but also that everyone should believe and understand the same thing that Nick believes in this quote.

“…wedging his tense arm imperatively under mine, Tom Buchanan compelled me from the room as though he were moving a checker to another square.”- Chapter One
This shows us a lot more about Tom in this chapter than it does about Nick. It tells us that everything Tom does is not only well-thought-out but also serves a purpose, it tells us that nothing Tom does is random, like a game of checkers.
